Understanding Concussion
Concussion is a brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that results in rapid movement of the brain within the skull - and it is one of the most mismanaged injuries in sport. It is a functional disturbance rather than a structural injury, meaning standard imaging (CT, MRI) is typically normal. Recovery is not one-size-fits-all, and my role is to provide accurate diagnosis, individualised recovery planning, and clearance for return to activity.
Acute Concussion Assessment
Assessment includes detailed symptom evaluation, cognitive testing, balance assessment, and neurological examination. I follow the latest Concussion in Sport guidelines.
Recovery & Return to Activity
- Relative rest (24-48 hours) - Brief period of reduced cognitive and physical activity.
- Gradual return to normal activities - Progressive increase in demands, guided by symptoms.
- Return to learn - Structured return to school or work with accommodations.
- Return to sport - Graded return-to-play protocol with medical clearance required before full contact.
Post-Concussion Syndrome
When symptoms persist beyond the expected recovery window, specialist assessment can identify specific contributing factors and guide targeted treatment. Management may involve vestibular rehabilitation, cognitive therapy, graduated exercise programs, and coordinated care.
Baseline Testing
Pre-season baseline concussion screening provides a valuable reference point for comparison if a concussion occurs during the season. Individual and team bookings available.
